Member Profile

WalterFedy has an internal Sustainability Advisory Committee and a Community Initiatives Committee with a mandate to develop various initiatives that have a positive impact on employees, the local community, and the environment. Inspired by two of their core values – Integrity and Environmental Sustainability – they have committed to achieving a Beyond Zero Carbon goal. Each year,  they will strive to reduce their corporate carbon emissions while offsetting their remaining carbon, becoming carbon-neutral now while working on reducing their emissions well into the future.

The Hamilton location continues to track employee commuting habits on a weekly basis to understand the impact on the company’s carbon footprint and propose targeted internal initiatives for reduction. Initiatives have included “bike-to-work week” and potential corporate memberships to Sobi Hamilton bike share and a car share organization.

Beyond their corporate commitments and initiatives, WalterFedy’s Hamilton office has teamed up with the Port Authority for community garbage clean-up in local parks in support of City Kidz, taken part in a community build for Habitat for Humanity, and organized a holiday food drive for Hamilton Food Share.

Sustainability Leadership Program Updates

Annual Impact Report 2022

Driven by our core values of Integrity and Environmental Sustainability, we are dedicated to achieving our Beyond Zero Carbon goal. Each year, we aim to reduce our corporate carbon emissions and offset the remaining carbon to achieve carbon neutrality. Our commitment extends to implementing a hybrid work approach that reduces GHG emissions associated with employee commuting, encouraging sustainable transportation options whenever possible.

In 2022, we installed four EV charging stations at our Kitchener head office, exclusively available to our employees for 24/7 use. We are actively exploring policies and initiatives to further support our employees in adopting electric vehicles and other sustainable commuting methods.

Our expertise in GHG emissions led us to engage with the owners of our Hamilton office building in 2021, assessing energy-efficient upgrades. Subsequently, we were contracted to assess their entire building portfolio in Hamilton, including the notable 20 Hughson building. By assisting real estate managers in municipalities and private developments, we contribute to informed decision-making on necessary upgrades aligned with our ambitious climate goals for 2030-2050.

Annual Impact Report 2021

In 2018, WalterFedy committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% over 2017 levels, which means we need to reduce business travel and commuting. We are actively encouraging employees to commute less, or more sustainably using bikes or transit, and to leverage communications tools to reduce the need for on-site meetings.

Recently we purchased enough carbon offsets to counter our 2019 GHG emissions. Our contribution will fund two projects in our province. The first is the Niagara Escarpment Forest Carbon project, which promotes and maintains ecosystems throughout the Escarpment. The second is the Ontario Biodiversity Afforestation Project, which re-establishes long-lived forest species on land formerly reserved for agriculture.

Annual Impact Report 2019

In 2017, Walterfedy joined the SBI. They will complete Verisae Carbon Accounting Tool training as a next step and will include a new employee that performs data modeling. Walterfedy has an internally developed software that tracks employee commute data, and they have been working with their landlord to obtain utility data to contribute to a GHG baseline.

Walterfedy would like to use point of use electrical meters to track equipment to support reliable estimations in their current building. Their experience in the SBI so far has created awareness of data constraints and about how they would set up monitoring for success in the future.
