We’re committed to helping Hamilton-Burlington businesses do well by doing good
A growing number of organizations in the Hamilton-Burlington Bay Area know that taking action towards a sustainable future is not only good for business, it leads to stronger communities – and ultimately a healthier planet.
For businesses like yours – and many others that want to reap the benefits of sustainable practices, but don’t know where to begin – Sustainable Hamilton Burlington (SHB) is your guide.
Empowering Local Businesses To Be Part Of The Bigger Solution
Sustainable Hamilton Burlington is a non-profit social organization made up of visionary community leaders, industry experts and volunteers. Since 2011, we have been the go-to resource for companies who believe as we do that sustainability is good for business and that sustainable business is good for us all.
Our purpose is to empower Hamilton and Burlington businesses to act, innovate and participate in creating a better, more sustainable future for everyone. Through practical tools and services, and our community partnerships, we help organizations of all sizes in all industries make a tangible, measureable impact to reach – often exceed – their sustainability goals.
Everything we do circles back to these three guiding pillars:
Collaborative Learning – Our learning forums and technical workshops feature leading government, industry, NGO and other experts. These valuable, information-packed events are opportunities for learning and sharing real-world sustainability best practices. See upcoming events.
Measurable Action – You can’t manage what you don’t measure. We provide tools and training to assist you in embedding sustainability into your business model, setting tangible goals, and measuring and reporting on your progress.
Credible Recognition – Your sustainability stories and successes are celebrated in our Annual Business Reports, at our annual Evening of Recognition, across social media channels and on this website.
Your SHB toolbox for sustainability success
Sustainable Business Initiative (SBI) – The SBI is our membership program. It is a target-based, multi-level sustainability program that guides, supports and celebrates members on their journey to sustainability. Discover what SBI can do for your business.
Collaborative Experiential Learning – This program connects SBI member businesses with students of McMaster University and Mohawk College to solve sustainability-related issues. Student intern teams undertake faculty-supervised projects with businesses as part of their course work – at no charge to you! Learn more about how students can help solve your sustainability issues.
Business Climate Action Toolkit – Launching in September 2018, the Business Climate Action Toolkit will be a free, online resource-hub supporting local businesses in building a climate-resilient, low-carbon future for themselves and our communities.
B Lab – SBI members can use the B Lab Impact Assessment online tool to set material goals, track performance over time and compare your performance against similar businesses.
Waste Diversion Resource Guide – This guide provides everything businesses need to know to establish or improve their waste diversion program. It includes best practices, case studies and localized resources. It was developed in response to the province’s increased focus on business waste and the 2016 Waste Free Ontario Act, which extends the responsibility of waste to producers.
GRI Tools & Templates – Ninety-three percent of the world’s largest 250 corporations use GRI Sustainability Reporting Standards. Many small- to medium-sized companies have followed suit to realize the benefits of accountability, identifying and managing risks, and seizing new opportunities. Using our Sustainable Business Initiative toolkit and trained specialists, GRI-based sustainability reporting can be accessible for any organization. Businesses that produce GRI reports receive special recognition for practicing the ‘gold standard’ in sustainable business management.
Collaborating together on common goals
No single organization or business can address the broad range of social, environmental and economic issues alone. We must work together to support and encourage each other, and to create sustainable communities. SHB is continually seeking strategic collaborations to further our purpose of empowering businesses in Hamilton and Burlington in their sustainability goals.
Green Economy Canada (formerly Sustainability CoLab Network) – As a one of seven Green Economy Hubs across Ontario, we can offer our members access to tools, resources and tailored expertise to help them set and achieve sustainability targets. At the same time, we have access to a network of peers to share best practices, challenges and innovations. Over 2016 and the first quarter of 2017, with the support of Green Economy Canada, member organizations collectively reduced GHG emissions by 44,257 tonnes!
Centre for Climate Change Management (CCCM) at Mohawk College – In 2017, SHB partnered with Mohawk College, The City of Hamilton and City of Burlington to launch the Centre for Climate Change Management at Mohawk in order to accelerate regional action on climate change. Through a new CCCM program, the “Industry Partnership Initiative”, local businesses can join the SBI program for a reduced first-year membership fee to gain assistance in reducing their greenhouse gas emissions, and also benefit from faculty-supervised, student interns at no cost. This is a tremendous, time-limited opportunity for businesses to improve their overall sustainability while being part of an important, high-profile regional effort to prepare the Bay Area to thrive in the new low carbon economy.
Our Future Hamilton Community Vision – SHB has been involved in city planning sessions to help shape a shared community vision and guide future decisions that affect us all.
Sustainable Hamilton Burlington shows us the way. Our relationship with SHB is very important to our success.
